What Is Red Light Therapy and Does It Actually Work for Women Over 40

May 07, 20267 min read

You have seen it everywhere. The glowing face masks. The panels in wellness clinics. The before and after photos on Instagram. And you have probably thought the same thing I did the first time I came across it.

Is this actually real or is it just another thing the wellness world is selling us?

I get it. After everything "you" have tried and invested in and hoped would be the thing, the bar for what gets through is high. So let me tell you what red light therapy actually is, what the science says, and why I use it every single day and will not be stopping anytime soon.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation or low level laser therapy, is the use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function in the body. It sounds complicated. The principle is actually beautifully simple.

Your cells have mitochondria. Mitochondria produce energy. Red and near-infrared light wavelengths, specifically between 630 and 850 nanometres, are absorbed by the mitochondria and stimulate them to produce more energy, more efficiently.

More cellular energy means better repair. Better regeneration. Better function across the body. From your skin to your sleep to your joints to your nervous system.

This is not a trend. The research behind photobiomodulation spans decades and thousands of studies. NASA researched it. The military has used it for wound healing. And for women in midlife navigating hormonal shifts, it is one of the most powerful tools available.

What Does Red Light Therapy Actually Do?

This is not a clinical checklist. These are the real, lived, daily experiences too many of us have been suffering through alone.

  • For Your Skin

This is where most people start and honestly it is where the results are most visible.

Red light stimulates collagen and elastin production, increases cellular turnover and reduces inflammation in the skin. The result over consistent use is skin that looks firmer, clearer and more luminous. Fine lines soften. Texture improves. That dull, tired quality that can creep in during perimenopause, partly driven by declining oestrogen affecting collagen levels, starts to shift.

I use the Therabody TheraFace Mask GLO from Healf changed daily and the difference in my skin over consistent use has been genuinely noticeable, almost overnight. What I would say is that you need to be consistent with it and not just pick it up every now and again and expect miracles!

  • For Inflammation and Joint Pain

Oestrogen has anti-inflammatory properties. As it declines, inflammation in the body can increase. Joint pain, muscle aches and that general sense of physical heaviness that arrives in midlife is often inflammation that has nowhere useful to go.

Red light therapy has well documented anti-inflammatory effects. It reduces inflammatory markers, supports tissue repair and has been shown to help with joint pain and muscle recovery. If your body has been hurting in ways that feel new and unexplained, this is worth understanding.

MY PERSONAL STORY

And I want to share something personal here because I think it matters.

After emergency surgery and a period of significant trauma, I was left with something called pelvic congestion syndrome. Varicose veins in the pelvis. Deeply painful and at times completely crippling. The doctors told me the only options were medication or further surgery.

I was not willing to accept that.

I invested in a red light therapy panel, committed to using it every single day, and three months later the pain has gone. Completely. Something the medical system told me could only be managed with medication or surgery.

I am not sharing this as a medical claim. I am sharing it because I believe you deserve to know what this technology is capable of when you show up for it consistently. The body is intelligent and when you give it what it actually needs, it responds in ways that can actually take your breath away!

  • For Sleep

Red and near-infrared light support melatonin production and help regulate the circadian rhythm. Evening use in particular, away from the blue light of screens, can support the body's natural shift towards sleep. For women whose sleep has been disrupted by perimenopause, adding red light to an evening wind down practice is one of the simplest and most effective things I have found.

  • For Cellular Repair and Longevity

At the cellular level, red light supports DNA repair, reduces oxidative stress and supports the kind of deep biological regeneration that slows the effects of ageing from the inside out. This is not anti-ageing in the way the beauty industry uses that phrase. This is working with the body's own intelligence to support it in doing what it already knows how to do.

Does Red Light Therapy Actually Work? What the Science Says

The research is real. This is not pseudoscience. It is photobiology, and it has been studied seriously for longer than most wellness trends have existed.

What Is the Difference Between a Red Light Face Mask and a Red Light Panel?

This is one of the most common questions and it is worth understanding clearly.

Red light face masks are designed specifically for the face and neck. They are targeted, convenient and ideal for daily skin focused use. I use mine while I am doing my morning breathwork practice or reading. It adds nothing to my routine because I have piggy backed it onto something I am already doing.

Red light panels are larger devices that treat the whole body or significant areas of it. They are the tool for systemic benefits like energy, inflammation, joint pain, sleep and full body cellular repair. You stand or sit in front of them for 10 to 20 minutes. The investment is higher but so is the range of benefit.

Honestly if you are going to start somewhere, I would begin with the face mask. See how your skin responds. Feel the difference in your energy. And then decide whether you want to go deeper with a panel.

How to Use Red Light Therapy

01

Consistency is everything

Daily or near daily use produces real results. Once or twice a week will not. Think of it like breathwork. The magic is in the repetition.

02

Distance matters

For face masks, follow device instructions. For panels, most research suggests 15 to 30cm from the skin.

03

Use it intentionally

Morning use is energising. Evening use supports sleep. I use my face mask in the morning during my breathwork practice.

04

Patience is key

Skin results begin at 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use. Energy and sleep benefits can come sooner.

Who Should Not Use Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy is considered very safe for most people. If you are pregnant, have any active cancer or are photosensitive, please speak with your doctor first. Never shine light directly into eyes without protection. If you are unsure, ask someone qualified to advise you.

My Honest Experience

My daily ritual now is twenty minutes in front of my red light panel every single morning. I piggyback it onto my meditation and breathwork practice so it costs me nothing extra in time. I simply show up for my morning practice and the panel does its work alongside me. That is the thing about the best tools. They fit into your life rather than demanding more of it.

I started using red light therapy because I was curious and because the science made sense to me at a cellular level. What I did not expect was how quickly I felt it rather than just saw it.

My skin has had an obvious visible change. Clearer, firmer, more alive. But the energy shift has been the one that has stayed with me. There is a steadiness to my energy on the days I use it that I have come to rely on and notice when it is absent.

For women in midlife navigating hormonal shifts, this is one of the tools I believe belongs in your daily ritual. Not instead of the inner work. Alongside it. Because your body is intelligent and it responds when you give it what it actually needs.

Your body is intelligent, my love. It responds when you give it what it actually needs.

That is the alchemy. And it has been waiting for you all along.
